Review
of July 2005 General Meeting
Calvin
Weeks, Director of the OU Cyber Forensics Lab, Shares Knowledge with CCOKC
Calvin
Weeks was the speaker at the July General Meeting and he presented much
information that all computer users should know. Calvin has many years
experience with law enforcement and security, dealing with computers. In
forensics, he works to eliminate trouble areas in the computer network at
OU.
He talked about protecting yourself from viruses and hackers. Some of the
methods by which these programs are allowed to be installed on your
computer were pointed out. He also discussed what different functions
these programs have and what they will do to compromise your information.
Calvin spoke on hard drive security, primarily what to do to clean the
hard drive in the computer that you are about to give away or sell. He
said that data can be retrieved from a supposedly clean drive if it is not
properly "wiped." Formatting a drive does not clean this information from
it; a wipe program should be used.
We would like to thank Calvin for giving his time to answer our questions
and leaving us with much valuable information that will help us keep our
computers more secure.
