General Meeting Review of December 15, 2005

by Liz Wright

The General Meeting followed a somewhat different format at the December meeting. It was decided to have a shorter than usual session, then enjoy the companionship of fellow computer users.
During the regular part of the meeting, we heard our president, David Robbins, describe the new system that will soon be in meeting room A. With technology moving at gigabyte speed, it is necessary for the club to keep up so we can handle study groups which require faster and more elaborate systems.
There was also discussion of what to look for in a monitor when shopping for that upgrade we all want. Prices are competitive, but if you don’t do some homework, you might end up with a monitor which doesn’t meet the standards for your setup.
Then came the drawing. What a show that was. The two member winners were not at all sure they wanted to take home the “prizes” which were offered. Two very old CRT monitors were on the front table to choose from. Dave finally persuaded each of them to choose one, hinting they could always donate them to their favorite charity if they had no personal use for them. (What charity would have them? was one question). With the choosing done, Dave then offered them a better deal. He brought out some other obsolete hardware and asked if they would rather trade the monitors for the other junk. Both said no to that offer. The light was beginning to dawn. He invited both members to come up to front and find a letter that was written on each monitor. The final deal was if they wanted to trade for whatever the letter indicated. Both said yes, and as a result Ron Hickman and Ed Mathews won brand new Acer LCD monitors. Ron won a 19" model and Ed won a 19" wide screen model. What great prizes and a good time was had by all.
Our guest, John Collins, won a one-year membership in the CCOKC.
Then the meeting was adjourned for food and fellowship.
