Are You Safe From Prying Eyes?

By Doris Collins, VP of Programs

How safe is your computer…really? We all know the necessity of a firewall, virus protection, spam blockers, ad and popup blockers, etc, but all of these are software- based utilities. Wouldn’t it be nice to know that you had a piece of physical hardware attached to your computer to further help keep out the bad guys? If you have a wireless computer and/or network in your home, how sure are you that your neighbor or perhaps that teenager parked outside isn’t “borrowing” your internet connection? Even if you don’t have a wireless system, do you know that you can make yourself invisible to prying eyes that would steal not only your internet connection but possibly much more? Do you know how to turn off the wireless part of your router, if you have one?

Our speaker this month, Eric Phillips, will answer all of these questions and more. You may remember that last year Eric and his business partner did a demonstration for us on home networking. This month’s presentation will be more focused – strictly on the router itself, why you should have one, and how to use it to make your computer system more secure from the outside world. Come prepared to take notes – you’re going to want to remember these instructions!

Eric and his partner, Brian Cardwell, own Executive Network Technology (“ENT”), a network services company serving all of Oklahoma and parts of north Texas. The company provides network solutions for establishments such as churches, hotels, restaurants, etc. Eric is very knowledgeable on this subject and should be able to provide us with some invaluable information.
