General Meeting for February 15th, 2006
by Doris Collins, VP of Programs
The guest speaker for this meeting will be Eric Phillips,
co-owner of Executive Network Technologies ("ENT"). The largest part of
ENT's business is building computer networks for offices, hotels, airports,
etc. Eric will explain the concept of file sharing between two or more
computers on the same network, whether wireless or hardwired. He will also
describe how one printer or o ther device can be shared by several computers.File sharing is the most basic function of a network. It allows users from one or more computers to access files or printers on one or more other computers. When computers are networked together, for example, files can be stored on the largest of the hard drives of the various computers (the file server), and merely accessed by other computers on the network, thereby not overloading the hard drive of the smaller, "client" computer. (A client computer is simply a computer that accesses files or resources stored on a different computer.) Eric has been "tinkering" with computers since he was a young teenager, and has gone on to build systems for individuals and businesses; he worked in the computer industry for several years before starting his own business with ENT's co-owner, Brian Cardwell, in 1999. He is very knowledgeable in every aspect of hardware, software and networking. His presentation should be very enlightening and helpful to those wishing to network home computers. A large part of ENT's business is also building, installing and maintaining computer systems in restaurants which allow information to flow from the dining area to the kitchen in a large establishment without the server having to take the order to the kitchen. They also provide "customer pagers" so that patrons can know when their table is ready. ENT has been in business for seven years; their offices are located at the opposite end of the building where our meetings are held. Please join us for this meeting; Eric should be able to answer any questions you may have about file sharing. |
