General Meeting for June 15, 2006
by Doris Collins, VP of Programs
This month's presenter should be of interest to
anyone who's ever done any publications, such as booklets,
newsletters, cookbooks, etc. Brett Field has been working in
the digital publishing arena since 1988 and has used QuarkXPress
since 1994. He covers a 9-state area for Quark, taking care of
customers and providing field support.
Quark has been the leader in desktop page layout since QuarkXPress was
released in the late 1980's (www.quark.com). Over 80% of the printed
pages you see were created in QuarkXPress - including The Daily
Oklahoman. QuarkXPress runs on Windows XP and MAC OS X computers.
Version 7 of QuarkXPress was released on May 23, 2006 (http://www.quark.com/products/xpress/launch.html).
Founded in Denver, Colorado in 1981, Quark was named after the
subatomic particle proposed as the building block for all matter, the
goal was to create software that would be the platform for publishing.
QuarkXPress made an immediate impact when it was released in 1987.
Desktop publishing was in its infancy, and most publications were
produced mechanically. QuarkXPress introduced precision typography,
layout, and color control to the desktop computer, and delivered those
features to designers at a fraction of the cost of typesetting systems
then in use. There are now more than three million QuarkXPress users
worldwide. Customers in more than 100 countries worldwide rely on
Quark products to create, design, and manage their documents - from
newspapers, magazines, and books to catalogs, brochures, packaging,
and online material.
Today, Quark maintains its industry leadership. QuarkXPress, helped
spark the revolution in desktop publishing. Quark is headquartered in
Denver, Colorado and is privately held.
QuarkXPress® is powerful design and page layout software with an
intuitive, versatile interface that lets you combine superior
typography with color and pictures to produce dynamic final output for
print and Web delivery. QuarkXPress is widely used by magazines,
newspapers, advertising agencies and design firms, marketers,
printers, corporate publishers, catalog houses, and book publishers.
Industry experts are calling QuarkXPress 7 one of Quark's most
significant upgrades ever. With more than 160 new features and
enhancements, QuarkXPress 7 cements Quark's tradition of innovation by
enabling a new way of working that focuses on the layout, design, and
production environments as a whole rather than as separate processes.
With new features ranging from transparency and Composition Zones™ to
enhanced PDF creation and print output, QuarkXPress 7 combines design
freedom, unparalleled collaboration, and support for multi-channel
communication in a single software tool.
Brett plans to bring a copy of QuarkXPress 7 with him for our drawing;
some lucky Club member will win a free copy of this great program! The
other prize for the drawing will be a Brother plain-paper fax machine
and a guest will receive a copy of Click & Burn. Everyone is welcome
to what promises to be an interesting and informative General Meeting.
See you in June...
