Networking With Windows XP

      by Troy Segler, Scibe

Those attending the February general meeting missed a great program on networking two or more computers, in effect creating work stations used for sharing data. Our speaker was Eric Phillips, who is a co-owner of Executive Network Technologies. His office is in the 3000 United Founders Building.

Eric provided everyone with a handout of instructions for enabling us to set up our personal network. He recommended establishing the computer using the most recently released operating system as the one which would essentially contain all the files and folders you might wish to be shared. Up to
something like eight or ten computers could be linked. My how the grandkids would enjoy playing interactive games during their visits to your house.

Each computer must contain any software necessary to be able to read and write in the file or folder you are accessing. Security can be established to control access to only those files you wish the sharing user to access. A password is recommended for security purposes.

Eric walked us through the steps one would use in establishing the home or business network. Some of the ideas appeared somewhat complicated, but by applying the routines he discussed I think I could potentially link my wife’s Windows 98SE to my WindowsXP machine. She really doesn’t want access to my computer as it gives her a sense of pride when she asks me to do something for her or assist her on her computer. This causes us to talk to each other. Our relationship is great!!!

If you are interested in more detail than I am able to provide here, you might wish to google “WinXP Pro File Sharing” to get the basic information for guiding you through this challenge.
