August General Session
"Are You An Experienced Surfer?"

July 16th at 7:00 PM
by Doris Collins

Doris CollinsWhat do you really know about surfing the Internet? OK, you know to bring up a Google Screen, type in a word or a phrase and press “go.” Hopefully, you get what you were looking for, or maybe not. Would you like to know a lot more than you do about surfing the Internet? Have we got a treat for you!

Mark Voyles is currently the Technology Coordinator for the Edmond Fire Department. Prior to this position he worked in IT for the City of Edmond for 17 years, so he is obviously very knowledgeable. In addition to this, he is a lifetime member of the Computer Club of Oklahoma City and former President of what was then the OKCPCUG (Oklahoma City PC Users Group) - as the Computer Club of Oklahoma City used to be known. Although he couldn't remember an exact date, Mark estimates he's been a member of the Club since approximately 1986.

In case you don’t know, the Club has recently installed a wireless network system. If you have a laptop and a wireless card, you are encouraged to bring it so that you can follow along and try some of the things you'll learn. (Be sure your battery is fully charged, as there will not be enough outlets for everyone to plug in.) If you don't have a laptop, hopefully you will be able to "share" with someone who does. Mark has prepared a handout for you to take home so you can remember all of the techniques you will see demonstrated.

The Computer Club of Oklahoma City has two door prizes to give to its members, and two for visitors. This month the prize for the first visitor will be a one-year membership to the Computer Club of Oklahoma City; the second visitor’s prize will be a 4GB Flash Drive. For the members’ drawings, we have a 500GB external hard drive and a 32GB flash drive!

Please join us for an informative lesson and stay for the drawing for these prizes. Remember that if you bring guests, you may complete an extra prize drawing slip for each guest you bring who has not attended the General Meeting in the last three months. However, if you win a prize, you are only allowed to win one prize an evening and if your name is drawn again, it will be put aside and another name drawn.

THE FOLLOWING IS VERY IMPORTANT:  In fairness to all, no one will be allowed to register for the drawing after 7:05 pm. You MUST have a current Computer Club of Oklahoma City badge with you to enter the members' prize drawing. If you forget your badge, you have lost it, or it has expired, you will not be eligible to fill out a prize drawing slip. If you need a new badge, or need to renew your membership to the Club, please see or email our Membership Chairman, Jack Milner, at least 24 hours before the General Meeting. No new or replacement badges will be printed the night of the meeting. Jack's email address is JMilner000@aol.com, and the phone number for the Club's Resource Center is 405-843-4300 (leave a message if there is no answer). This is a firm rule for all meetings, so please be sure you bring your badge with you each month. You are welcome to stay for the presentation without your badge, but you will not be allowed to participate in the drawing, no matter how long you've been a member of the Club. You can, of course, purchase a membership in the Club that evening, but will not be eligible for the members' drawing until the following month.

SeniorNet Users Group  (SNUG)

News from Charlene Francis  For Those 50 +

SNUG is a group of computer users age 50 plus. Together, we have been exploring and learning about computers and the ever changing technology for 16 years. At our weekly meetings, we help each other solve problems and we also share the good news and the bad news about what we do with our computers; or, we may have a presentation given by one of our members or a computer related company. Joining this group is a great opportunity to become a member of a very friendly and special community that offers benefits not found elsewhere.

When you join our group, there are many benefits including a 1 year membership on the local level in CCOKC (Computer Club Oklahoma City) and on a National (or, International) level, in SeniorNet (SrNet) which is based in Santa Clara, CA, and both are non-profit organizations with a strong mission to help others learn about computers. If you want to know more about them, check out their website, www.ccokc.org and/or www.seniornet.org. Another significant benefit is the SrNet Computer Classes that we offer.

SNUG is a non-profit organization and an integral part of the Computer Club of Oklahoma City (CCOKC). A large portion of our income is from Membership Dues. The total cost of a Sr. Combo (or SNUG) Membership is $60.00 for the 1st year. ($40.00 goes to SeniorNet and the remaining $20 goes to CCOKC). The total cost for renewal fees for 1 year is $55, ($30.00 for SeniorNet and $25.00 for CCOKC). Further, you pay renewal fees directly to each organization when you receive your renewal notice from them.

SNUG meets every Thursday morning from 10a.m. -12 Noon and you do not have to be a member to attend.  The second Thursday is Windows Tips and Tricks. All other Thursday meetings are problem solving sessions, presentations, visits to cool websites etc.  In the problem solving area, if one person doesn't know the answer, another person will. Visitors are always welcome. If you would like to learn more about us/our SrNet Classes, or, if you have a question, please feel free to visit our meeting at the time indicated above or contact Charlene Francis, 405 359 5675/ cfrancis2@cox.net.

July 16, 2009 General Meeting Review
Are You into YouTube or Perhaps A Wannabe,

By: Troy Segler

The July 2009 General Meeting of the Computer Club of Oklahoma City enjoyed an interesting program by Jim Foreman, who recently joined the organization.  He previously joined in some discussion at SNUG regarding his experiences with the internet.  For somewhat of a biography of Jim, you might wish to look at the June announcement on our website regarding the July program.

Jim first made the point that when taking any pictures you must not move the camera.  The object and the camera must remain stationary unless you are using a movie camera.  He received his first movie camera this past Christmas and has began the path to becoming an accomplished user. Another pointer was that when taking pictures with a movie camera, you should take all the shots you want, then edit out those scenes that cannot be used effectively to display the story you are trying to tell.

After taking your pictures or scenes those with Windows XP or later operating systems have access to a program Windows Movie Maker that can be used to construct .avi movies.  You can import still pictures or movie clips into Movie Maker and edit to include music or a monologue regarding the video you are constructing.  Frames per second can be selected based upon the speed that is ideal for presenting your message.

Once you have your clip ready, go to YouTube and upload the clip to your website on YouTube. In order to establish a website or page it is necessary to establish an account with a user name and password.  On YouTube is is possible to leave your video available to anyone having a login for YouTube or to restrict to only those persons you wish to read it.  As a account holder in YouTube, you have the capability to report any sites that might contain vulgar, indecent, or otherwise inappropriate for general viewing.

Jim took us to his site and we viewed a listing of things he has posted.  He opened a couple of his videos and displayed them for us.  Jim is humorous and entertaining as well as being very talented at the many things he has accomplished, such as building an airplane, building a house, etc. in additional to being a good photographer.

Mark Voyles, who was an early member of the organization that preceeded the Personal Computer Users Group (PCUG) of Oklahoma City and was club president in 1993 and 1994 was in attendance at ths meeting.  Mark is an outstanding photographer and very talented in many ways.  He demonstrated the process of collecting several postings under one folder that is called a “channel” on You Tube.  Several people from the audience participated during the presentation by providing personal experiences or asking very relevant questions.  We had a very good meeting.

Our desire is that general meetings cover a variety of topics relevant to computer uses and solutions.  If you do anything with a computer that could assist others in improving their experiences and would be interested in presenting a program at one of our future general meetings, please contact Doris Collins, club president.  Her email address is posted on the CCOKC website.

At the conclusion of the presentation by Jim Foreman, door prizes were announced and names drawn.  As is our custom visitors participate as well as members.  Jay Robertson, a visitor, received a free one year membership to CCOKC.  Another visitor, Gary Horton, received a 4GB Flash drive.  The first member name drawn was that of Carol Bennett, recipient of a cordless laser mouse.  Jim Ike received a 250 GB portable external hard drive, and Alex Weeks, one of our youngest members received a CD containing patriotic music.

Please plan to meet with us on August 20th for another informative meeting.
