Come to Our General Meeting on Thursday, July 17th at the Resource Center of the CCOKC

July Meeting: SEE WHAT’S BEHIND PUBLISHING THE SEASONED READER… By Doris Collins, Acting Program Director

Doris CollinsIt is with deep regret that I accepted the resignation of Lee Wheeler from the Board of Directors and from his position as Program Director. Due to a pressing family health matter, Lee felt that he needed to focus all his time and energy to be of help to his wife. We will miss you, Lee, and thanks for all your hard work and what you accomplished for us.

Are you the one who gets asked to do the church bulletin or the club newspaper? Do you do it, but don’t  really have an understanding of the easiest way to perform your task? Maybe you secretly want to write a book. If any of these apply to you, or you just want to learn something you don’t already know, be sure to attend our General Meeting for July.

Clifton Grider, editor of the Seasoned Reader, will be our guest speaker on Thursday, July 17. He plans to show us how computers make quick work of publishing his paper, including the graphics, ads, etc. He plans to bring his graphic artist with him, so it should prove to be an interesting evening.

Clifton’s previous experience before coming to Oklahoma included a position as a Senior Citizen’s Home administrator, and his first love is working with Senior Citizens. He is very much involved in the upcoming Senior Expo to be held in September in Bricktown. He has some great ideas for ensuring that everyone has a great time!

Prior to Clifton’s presentation I will make any pertinent announcements concerning matters discussed by the Board of Directors at our meeting on the previous Thursday, and we will have a brief Q&A, so bring your computer/technology questions.

Be sure to attend the meeting so you can order your Polo shirt or T-Shirt with the Club logo, and so you can pick up some of the new Club business cards to distribute to friends and family.

This month we have some great door prizes: for the members, we have a PNY 16Gb Flash Drive, and a Bushnell wireless Weather FX3 3-day Weather Forecaster. For the visitors, we have a membership to the Computer Club of Oklahoma City and a copy of Trend Micro Internet Pro security software.

Please join us for an informative lesson and stay for the drawing for these great prizes. Remember that if you bring guests, you may complete an extra prize drawing slip for each guest you bring who has not  attended the General Meeting in the last three months. However, if you win a prize, you are only allowed to win one prize an evening and if your name is drawn again, it will be put aside and another name drawn.

THE FOLLOWING IS VERY IMPORTANT:  In fairness to all, no one will be allowed to register for the drawing after 7:05 pm. You MUST have a current Computer Club of Oklahoma City badge with you to enter the members' prize drawing. If you forget your badge, you have lost it, or it has expired, you will not be eligible to fill out a prize drawing slip. If you need a new badge, or need to renew your membership to the Club, please see or email Jack Milner, our Membership Chairman at least 24 hours before the General Meeting. No new or replacement badges will be printed the night of the meeting. Jack's email address is JMilner000@aol.com, and the phone number for the Club's Resource Center is 405-843-4300 (leave a message if there is no answer). This is a firm rule for all meetings, so please be sure you bring your badge with you each month. You are welcome to stay for the presentation without your badge, but you will not be allowed to participate in the drawing, no matter how long you've been a member of the Club.

The General Meeting of the Computer Club of Oklahoma City is on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm. The meeting is held at 3000 United Founders Blvd. Suite 201, Oklahoma City, OK.  (This address is NOT in the United Founders Tower.)

Complimentary coffee and refreshments will be served, and soft drinks are available at a cost of $.50.  Please invite a friend to join you for this meeting.

News from Charlene Francis  For Those 50 +

Our Holiday and Birthday luncheon was a big success and a good time was had by all at our last meeting. A big thanks to everyone who attended and another big thanks to those who brought the good food that we shared. Our attendance was 80+ and it was so good to see everyone.

SeniorNet Class Schedule and Registration Form (updated 07/07)

SNUG is a group of computer users age 50 plus. Together, we have been exploring and learning about computers and the ever changing technology for 16 yeasrs. At our weekly meetings, we help each other solve problems and we also share the good news and the bad news about what we do with our computers; or, we may have a presentation given by one of our members or a computer related company. Joining this group is a great opportunity to become a member of a very friendly and special community that offers benefits not found elsewhere.

When you join our group, there are many benefits including a 1 year membership on the local level in CCOKC (Computer Club Oklahoma City) and on a National (or, International) level, in SeniorNet (SrNet) which is based in San Francisco, CA, both are non-profit organizations with a strong mission to help others learn about computers. If you want to know more about them, check out their website, www.ccokc.org and/or www.seniornet.org. Another significant benefit is the SrNet Computer Classes offered by the Learning Center for a small fee. Click here for Class Schedule and Registration Form.

SNUG is a non-profit organization and a partner with the Computer Club of Oklahoma City (CCOKC). A large portion of our income is from Membership Dues. The total cost of a Sr. Combo (or SNUG) Membership is $60.00 for the 1st year. ($40.00 goes to SeniorNet and the remaining $20 goes to CCOKC). The total cost for renewal fees for 1 year is $55, ($30.00 for SeniorNet and $25.00 for CCOKC). Further, you pay renewal fees directly to each organization when you receive your renewal notice from them.

SNUG meets every Thursday morning from 10a.m. -12 Noon and you do not have to be a member to attend.  The second Thursday is Windows Tips and Tricks. All other Thursday meetings are problem solving sessions, presentations, visits to cool websites etc.  In the problem solving area, if one person doesn't know the answer, another person will. Visitors are always welcome. If you would like to learn more about us or have a question, please feel free to visit our meeting at the time indicated above or contact Charlene Francis at cfrancis2@cox.net

JUNE GENERAL MEETING REVIEW
by Susie Maguire

This past March our President, Doris Collins, attended the Florida Associated PC Users’ Group’s (“FACUG”) Conference, where she attended a presentation on the Garmin Model 200 GPS.  Doris shared this helpful information with us at our June 19, 2008 meeting.

Did you know that this GPS tells you where you are, how fast you are moving, how long it will take you to get there?  It recalculates your ETA if you are at a stop light or held up in traffic, or miss a turn.  How is it telling you all this?  It gives audio and visual instructions while you are driving; it helps you find your car, retail facilities, restaurants by food categories, points of interest, nearest ATM's, gas stations, changes language for you, etc. It just knows the whole world!

Doris, thank you for an awesome presentation.  Come and join us on the third Thursday of each month.  You will be surprised at how much you can learn, and WE LOVE TO SHARE!

At the conclusion of the meeting, our usual drawing for door prizes was held. One of our visitors, Tony Phillips, was the winner of the free membership in the CCOKC. That membership will render him eligible to participate in future drawings for member door prizes. Another visitor, Mrs. M Williams, received a copy of Trend Micro Internet Security Pro.  Bill Phillips, father of Tony Phillips, won a copy of Vista Ultimate, and Hazel LeClaire won a cable modem donated by Cox Cable. (See photos below; no photo available for Mrs. M.  Williams).

Plan to attend the July meeting for a great presentation and more exciting door prizes!

What is a Study Group

The Computer Club of OKC offers many different Study Groups. They are groups of 10-50 people who meet monthly to learn about a particular subject. The format is part presentation and part facilitated discussion. These meetings are supported by our membership. There is no charge, but a $2 donation is requested to defray the rental cost of the room.

Come to a Study Group in our Resource Center at 3000 United Founders Blvd.!

We are located at the east end of the Center 3000 Building in Suite 201, so use Entrance One on the east side of the building.
